Change of Language From English to Spanish

Dear readers,

This is just to let you know that I have decided to broaden the reach of AskSalomon by writing the next coming posts in Spanish.

I am adding a translation box on the sidebar, so you don’t miss a blog post no matter in what language I write it.

My intention is to attract as many people looking for ways to improve their current life regardless of the language or region of the planet they currently are.

I think that the best way for me to to achieve this is by writing in my native language, Español.

The Newest Police Dragnet: The Web

First, MySpace. Now, Mugshotbook?

Like unhip adults late to adopt a fad, police departments and other law enforcement agencies are jumping on the social networking bandwagon. They hope to break down bureaucratic boundaries between departments and jurisdictions and further the fight against crime.

A few companies in the field are developing promising businesses, and supporters have given the trend a slightly cringe-inducing name: Law Enforcement 2.0.

As in so many other realms where the use of technology has rapidly expanded, this crime-fighting method promises great improvements over traditional ways of getting things done. But it also challenges existing privacy protections, like limitations on the information investigators can share about people they suspect of committing crimes.

Most prominently, police agencies are now using the same Web 2.0 tools as everyone else — sites like YouTube, Twitter and MySpace. Last month, in a case that made headlines in the United States, the police in Auburn, Maine, posted images on Facebook from a surveillance video that showed three teenagers vandalizing the spa at a local Hilton hotel.

Facebook members soon provided tips, and suspects were arrested and charged with burglary and criminal mischief.

The Auburn police publicly heralded the investigative possibilities of Facebook. But to avoid breaking the law themselves, the police then blurred the faces of the teenagers in the photos, because it is against the law in Maine for the police to disseminate information about minors publicly.

Now Web services are being developed specifically to allow public and private investigative agencies to share information, and these tools are increasingly popular within law enforcement.

One service, called CrimeDex, is billed by its creators as a “Facebook for law enforcement.” Jim Hudson, a former police officer, co-founded the service in 2002 after growing frustrated with the wasted time investigators spent trying to determine whether other agencies were chasing the same…

A Facebook Just for Techies

The software company Spiceworks has a small audience at small and midsize businesses that technology advertisers are eager to reach: the information technology managers at those firms.

Spiceworks started in 2006 in Austin, Texas, in response to complaints among information technology professionals about the lack of a single application to manage their company networks and the hours they spent scanning Google for solutions to technology problems.

“We wanted to create a wonderful software product for IT managers that was simple, quick to download and easy to learn and use and with a fun social networking twist,” said Jay Hallberg, a Spiceworks co-founder. Spiceworks created downloadable software that helps technology professionals manage, track and report on the software and hardware on their company’s network, all under one application.

Spiceworks has become a popular destination for corporate technology people — more than 600,000 information technology managers — to help one another with problems, and share their favorite products and services.

“Spiceworks provides a concentrated audience that Google or another search engine can’t,” said Megan Lueders, vice president for marketing at a Spiceworks advertiser, LifeSize Communications, a provider of high-definition video products.

“With Google, your prospect could be anyone from a student to a competitor to a chief technology officer. But with Spiceworks, you know you’re talking to an IT professional.”

Last year the company attracted 72 advertisers, up from 24 in 2007. Advertisers have included Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Intel, Advanced Micro Devices and Sony. During the same period, the company’s user base more than doubled.

“Spiceworks has a unique vantage point that Google and trade magazines don’t have: It’s used only by IT professionals and while they’re doing their work, so the data and targeted audience Spiceworks has is unprecedented,” said Emily Riley, senior analyst with Forrester Research. “Marketers know exactly what products users have, what they need…

Mutiny Aftermath: Bangladesh Blocks YouTube

Bangladesh blocked access to the video-sharing site YouTube after it hosted a recording of a tense meeting between the prime minister and army officials following a bloody mutiny by border guards, officials said Monday.

The insurrection last month claimed more than 70 lives, shook the two-month-old government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and raised tensions with the powerful military, which opposed her handling of the incident.

YouTube “has been temporarily blocked in the national interest,” said Abbas Faruq, a spokesman for the government’s regulatory body that oversees the Internet, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission.

Faruq said gateway access to a few other Web sites, like esnips.com, were also being blocked. He would not say when the sites would be unblocked.

Zia Ahmed, the telecommunications commission chairman, defended the decision.

“The government can take any decision to stop any activity that threatens national unity and integrity,” Ahmed said, according to the online news service bdnews24.com.

The audio clip recorded Hasina defending her decision to negotiate with the mutineers while army officials shouted and jeered, drowning her out and preventing her from speaking.

The clip was being posted on blogs and overseas Web sites that cater to Bangladeshis.

Nasrin Sultana, a manager at Access Telecom Bangladesh Limited, one of the country’s major Internet providers, said the site was blocked late Sunday because of an audio clip from the March 1 meeting. Officials at Google Inc., YouTube’s parent company, could not be immediately reached for comment.

Military officials and others with knowledge of the meeting said the gathering was tense.

The Feb. 26-27 revolt at the Dhaka headquarters of the Bangladesh Rifles, a paramilitary border patrol force commanded by army officers, left senior army officials furious at Hasina for negotiating with the mutineers instead of ordering an army attack.

The Online Experiments that Could Help Newspapers

The Bakersfield Californian is an anomaly in the newspaper business. While other papers are shutting their doors and filing for bankruptcy, it’s expanding. The reason is the paper’s 2005 launch of an online social network, called Bakotopia.com, aimed at reaching nonreaders, especially the young people in this city of nearly 329,000.

The Web site has caught on to the point where Bakersfield Californian now publishes 20,000 copies of a free magazine with content from Bakotopia twice a month. The articles range from reviews of the local theater scene to goings-on at various hot spots. Because the magazine’s audience is young, hip, and hard to reach, “advertisers do pay full rates,” says Dan Pacheco, senior manager of digital products at the company. The magazine even turns a profit.

These are dark days for the newspaper business. Advertising is plummeting, and papers are going under with alarming regularity. In December, Tribune Co., which owns the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune, filed for bankruptcy. This year, Hearst said it might sell or shut down the San Francisco Chronicle, and Philadelphia Newspapers, which owns The Philadelphia Inquirer, filed for bankruptcy. Just a week ago, the Rocky Mountain News in Denver published its last edition. Even the New York Times Co., which owns one of the country’s strongest papers, has suspended its dividend. The Zacks publishing stocks index is down 80 percent from its 52-week high.

Your Own Digital Magazine, Anyone?

Newspapers had hoped that their Web sites would help them replace evaporating print revenue. But an online ad typically garners one-tenth of the revenue of a print ad, estimates Rick Edmonds, media business analyst at the Poynter Institute. “The phrase in the industry is, ‘You are trading dollars for dimes,’” he says.
